Rule13 strength and conditioning are going to do a study using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). There have been a lot of studies done on the FMS and it is widely used as a predictor of injury when screening athletes. One of the issues with the FMS is that it is performed unloaded and it has been mentioned that athletes will be under some sort of load when playing sport or training in the gym. This could be from the forces generated during running, sprinting, jumping or from many exercises they perform in the gym. Rule13ltd is going to perform two studies in one. The first will be to compare the scores from a screen as it is normally performed and then another screen with the athlete with an external load. This will determine if the external load gives a different reading to the normal test.
The second part of the study will be to see if FMS screening while loaded is a better predictor of injury for the functional fitness athlete.
Rule13 needs the help of around 50-60 functional fitness athletes to take part in this study. It will include two FMS screenings and a questionnaire. It will also require you to supply updates at regular intervals to record if you have been injured or not during the process. This will be done via email.
This will supply you with information on your movement, and as the FMS is good at finding asymmetries in your movement, you can see if there is a chance of a future injury as asymmetries have been shown to be a predictor of future injury. It can also lead to reduced power output and efficiency of movement. This will give you something to consider for future training.
If you own a gym and your members are interested in helping out with this or even if you’re just an individual athlete in a gym who would like to take part in this study, then please get in contact with rule13ltd either via email info@rule13ltd.com, jonny@rule13ltd.com or via the web page, facebook or intstagram.
